PDF open password vs. permissions password
Published September 3, 2026 · About 5 minutes
“Password-protected PDF” can describe two different controls: one blocks the document from opening, while the other limits actions such as printing or editing.
The short answer
| Protection | What the user sees | What unlocking needs |
|---|---|---|
| Open password Also called a user password | The PDF reader asks for a password before showing the document. | The correct existing open password is required. |
| Permissions protection Controlled by an owner password | The PDF opens, but printing, copying, or editing may be limited. | Omni PDF Unlocker can create an unrestricted copy without prompting when the document already opens, provided you are authorized to modify it. |
What is a PDF open password?
An open password encrypts the document so a reader needs the correct credential before it can display the contents. If Omni PDF Unlocker detects this protection, it asks for the existing password before it can read and rewrite the file.
This is not a password-recovery feature. If the password is unknown, the appropriate next step is to ask the document owner or the person who created it.
What is an owner or permissions password?
A PDF owner password is associated with permissions configured by the document creator. Those permissions can allow or disallow printing and particular kinds of document modification. The PDF may still open without any prompt.
This explains why an unlock operation can sometimes run without you entering a password: the app can already read the document, and it writes a new output without the source restrictions. Only use that capability on files you own or have permission to change.
Can a PDF use both?
Yes. A PDF can require an open password and also define owner-level printing or editing permissions. To unlock that file, enter the valid open password first; the resulting output can then be written without either type of protection.
Which password should I set when protecting a PDF?
- Use an open password when only intended recipients should be able to view the document.
- Use an owner password and permissions when the document may be viewed but printing or changes should be limited.
- Use both when you need access control and post-open permissions.
Keep the passwords somewhere safe. Chang Studio does not receive them and cannot restore a forgotten password.
